How Can Digital Marketing Help Small and Medium Businesses?

With the way the ways of doing businesses have evolved in the past 5 years or so, it has become utmost important even for the small business owners to adopt to the online world. It doesn’t matter if you are selling your products online or not, you nevertheless need certain digital marketing strategies. Why? Well I am going to explain that further, but till then just try and think about why does a company like Coca-Cola uses the online mediums.

So to clearly answer the ‘Why Digital’ question, let’s start by understanding the current consumer trends. Clearly maximum shopping still happens offline. Almost 90% of the people in India still buy offline, however this rate is decreasing rapidly. However If we consider a much more mature audience like that of USA, still almost 60% shopping there still happens offline. So why digital?

Even though the majority of the sales happens offline, I think we all will agree with the fact that the pre buying phases of a customer i.e. when the customer gets aware that a particular product or service exists, or when a customer believes he has a need of the product or service and looks out for various options and feedbacks and reviews online has shifted online. Gone are those days when we used to call up our friends and relatives to ask about their experience. And these are the phases that lead to a sale finally. So I think it’s pretty obvious. I will target my audience only at places where my audience actually is i.e. the Internet!

More importantly digital is important because of attribution. Earlier when we used to post ads on newspapers, or put up hoardings or pamphlets, there was no way to track the sales. No one really knew which channel was actually working. With digital, I can track my customer at each stage. Who sees the ad, who clicks on the ad, who visits the website, who does what on the website, everything can be tracked. Wouldn’t it be great if you knew that your email campaign was driving more sales than the campaign on Facebook?

Small businesses like that of packers and movers, real estate agents, or any B2B business like offering  wedding equipment need leads to grow their businesses. Already there has been a slight shift towards digital by these players. These small businesses have started using platforms like magicbricks, indiamart, justdial, sulekha and more for generating leads. However on such platforms you always get shared leads and the quality of these leads is not the best.  So what can be done?

One thing we all need to understand is that digital is easy if you understand the business and its requirements well. With the presence of so many user friendly, cost effective and even free tools, you can create and execute the whole digital strategy on your own. For example you can use WordPress to create your website for free, and trust me it’s very easy. You can use Mailchimp which allows you to send 12,000 emails for free and helps create email automation. Creating campaigns on Google and Facebook is also not that difficult, and you only pay for results you get. So you might be thinking that it would be better to just outsource all this to an agency, well you can try that. All I am saying is that it’s not always the best choice to make. Firstly if you know nothing about digital, how will you know what the agency is doing is correct or not? Secondly for making any small change on a website, you will always have to contact your web developer who will charge you each time you want a change.

Do you want to be the one to understand the importance of digital and leverage it to your advantage or you want to not believe me and continue with the old traditional techniques. The decision is all yours. But If you ask me Digital is the need of the hour, only who adopts and is agile and innovative shall ride this wave of success.
